Café da Maria in Frankfurt’s Bornheim district brings a slice of Portugal to a quiet residential street. This intimate café specializes in Portuguese flavors, offering a relaxed spot where you can sample traditional pastries like Pastel De Nata or the festive Bolo Rei—a classic Christmas cake known locally as Königskuchen.

Inside, the atmosphere feels like stepping into a small Portuguese town rather than a bustling German city. The space is modest but welcoming, with friendly staff who are clearly passionate about their heritage and eager to share it, even if it means navigating a mix of languages. Expect a genuine, sometimes delightfully chaotic service style that adds to the authentic vibe.

Visitors come here for more than just coffee and sweets—there’s a modest selection of Portuguese grocery items, wines, and the local herbal liqueur Likor Beirão, making it easy to bring a piece of Portugal home. The prices are reasonable, so it’s a convenient daily stop for locals craving a taste of the Mediterranean without the crowds.

The café works well for casual mid-morning or afternoon breaks, especially if you like pairing your espresso or cappuccino with a simple sandwich like the Tosta Mista or treats like olives and croissants. It’s also a place where last-minute catering can turn a small event into a shared celebration – customers have appreciated the personal touch when ordering special cakes or platters.

Because it’s tucked away in a mostly residential area, the scene is calm and unpretentious. The clientele ranges from neighborhood regulars and families to occasional visitors who stumble upon a genuine local experience. If you’re not in a rush and enjoy small, meaningful food discoveries, Café da Maria offers an easygoing, culturally textured pause in Frankfurt’s daily rhythm.

Great Portuguese cafe in a super residential area of Frankfurt. The pastries were delicious, and service very prompt and friendly! They also have a big collection of Portuguese wines and liquors.

I had the pleasure of placing a last-minute food order with Maria Josè, and I am beyond impressed with the exceptional service she provided. Despite the late notice, she not only took on the challenge but also managed to create a delicious and extensive menu for my birthday celebration. The food was a hit with everyone, and the birthday cake was a true highlight. Maria Josè’s dedication to customer satisfaction is evident, and I genuinely appreciate her efforts in making my celebration memorable. I look forward to future orders, confident in the outstanding service she consistently delivers. Thank you, Maria Josè, for your exceptional culinary skills and accommodating nature!

Everything is original: coffee, food, all the other items you can buy, the decoration, the ambience, the personal, the owner, the laughter, and most of the customers. One of the best places to learn some words in Portuguese with Google Translator since ordering an espresso can be a real challenge. People who do not like the sometimes chaotic but funny style of portugese services should avoid that place.

It’s a family-owned bakery and supermarket with some seats. Nice and friendly staffs, very good price. Coffee and sweets is average but nothing to complain, I will try their Nata next time.
